The “Nitty-Gritty” Stuff:
Drugs and Alcohol: We have a zero tolerance policy for drugs and Alchohol on the Koviashuvik Campus. Drugs and drinking, are forbidden for the duration of the internship and are grounds for immediate dismissal without refund.
Smoking: Smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas and we require all butts to be disposed of safely in the provided sand bins. Smoking is not allowed in buildings.
Personal Image: Koviashuvik accepts personal expression through dress and body adornment. In addition, we feel that we represent a lifestyle and way of being that deserves respect. While you are an intern at Koviashuvik, please be aware that you represent the school and lifestyle to our local community and to the larger world. We expect interns to be clean and well kept, both at the school and off our land.
Good Housekeeping: Keeping a clean living space is one of the most important first steps in any simple life endeavor. We will hold interns to a high standard of quality in this regard, as it would be doing you a disservice not to. In addition, Koviashuvik is a public-access property. Curious neighbors and visiting strangers may wander in at any moment, and we want to represent the best that this lifestyle has to offer.
Character Expectations: Above all, we expect interns to have a desire to learn, and to be willing and positive members of the community. We expect interns to be self-motivated, thorough in their work, and meticulous in their clean up and care of tools.
Transportation: Farmington is 9 miles away. There is some opportunity to carpool when we go to do errands. If you are without a car, we strongly recommend bringing a bike. Past interns have also had good luck hitchhiking to town!
Car Parking: Intern cars are parked in the school parking area, approximately ¼ mile from the school center.
Outhouse: Interns use the school’s public composting toilet and are responsible for keeping it clean and neat.
Electricity: Interns can usually charge cell phones, laptops, headlight batteries, etc., from the photovoltaic system. Occasionally we have to wait for the sun to come out again!
Phone/Internet/Library: There is no cell reception here! Depending on your carrier, service starts between one and five miles down the road. There is a landline phone available outside our cabin. Internet is available in town at the public library. Interns may also borrow books from the public library using a Koviashuvik library card, provided they agree to cover the cost of late fees and lost/damaged books.
Music: Human-created music is always welcome! To hold the space for all involved in the community, please do not play recorded music on speakers.
Pets: No pets, please.
Use of Koviashuvik Tools and Equipment: Interns are expected to care for any of Koviashuvik’s tools and equipment that are used, and to repair or replace, at our discretion, damage caused by intern misuse or inattention.
